The International Conference on ‘The Rule of Law – A Strategic Priority of the European Union’s External Action’ is the final event of an interdisciplinary Jean Monnet project (ROLA) conducted by the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and co-funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission. This conference aims to assess the importance of the rule of law as a strategic priority of the European Union (EU)’s external action as mandated by article 21 of the Treaty on European Union. The conference will bring together scholars from various disciplines (inter alia law, economics, international relations and political science), high-level officials from EU institutions and EU partner countries, and representatives from civil society. Generating theoretically and practically relevant findings for both researchers and practitioners, this conference focuses on an increasingly important though still under-theorized and underexplored topic: the EU’s strategic prioritization of the rule of law towards emerging powers.
